National Magic Week – Press Page

The roots of National Magic Week date back over 90 years.  In the summer of 1927, less than one year after the death of Harry Houdini, a “Houdini Day” was established.  In 1938, Les Sholty, a Chicago member of the Society of American Magicians, sought official sanction for a “Houdini Day.”  A friend of the Houdini’s requested and obtained permission from Mrs. Houdini to proclaim October 31st as National Magic Day in honor of Harry Houdini.  A plan was formulated to celebrate this day by having free magic performances for shut-ins and the handicapped, who would otherwise not be able to go out and enjoy a show.  The first radio broadcast about National Magic Day occurred on July 20, 1938 on Radio station KQW.  Mrs. Houdini participated in that broadcast.

It wasn't long before National Magic Day became National Magic Week.

Mayor Bloomberg proclaims “MAGIC WEEK” in New York City

"The week of October 25-31st has been proclaimed ”MAGIC WEEK” by the City of New York, so that it coincides with The Society of American Magicians’ annual event. The mayor recognized that “ More than a century ago, a group of New York City magicians gathered in the back room of Martinka and Company’s famous magic shop to form their organization. For more than fifty years the Society has recognized the anniversary of the death of Harry Houdini with a special week of events to highlight the charitable work of its members throughout the year; during which magicians volunteer their talents performing in schools, veterans hospitals., senior facilities and nursing homes and for people who cannot afford to pay for this type of entertainment . “Magic Week” is when The Society of American Magicians takes its bows.” “It is no illusion that New Yorkers are some of the most generous people in the world. This week’s events are a wonderful opportunity to recognize the talented and dedicated magicians who lend a helping hand"
