I.B.M. and S.A.M. Plan International Magic Competition for 2008!

July 7, 2005 - The Society of American Magicians and International Brotherhood of Magicians, the two oldest and largest magic organizations in the United States, have joined together to stage an International Magic Competition to be held July 7-12 2008 in New Orleans, LA. The six day event will culminate by awarding the largest contest prize ever, $10,000 each for both the stage and close-up contest winners from a group of over 100 championship competitors. Added to the week long excitement will be gala stage shows, a gala close-up show, world-class lecturers, a banquet and several off-site activities.

Following six months of research and interviews by a committee jointly appointed the I.B.M. and S.A.M., plans for the event were approved earlier this month by the Boards of both organizations at annual meetings in Reno and Boston. Both the S.A.M. and I.B.M. will use the International Magic Competition in place of their regular conventions that year, and will hold their business meetings separately during the event. Both organizations will hold their annual conventions in 2006 and 2007 as usual. If this model is as successful as planned, it could be held again in five or six years.

The New Orleans venue was chosen for its combination of theaters, food and entertainment, and affordability for the 2000 attendees who are expected from all corners of the world. With nearly1300 rooms and 80,000 sq. ft. of meeting space, the organizing committee has selected the Gold Key Award winning Marriott Hotel on the edge of the French Quarter as host hotel for the convention. The 2700 seat Saenger Theater and 1700 seat Orpheum Theater are within a few short blocks of the hotel. A recently completed trolley line also runs past the Marriott between the waterfront and theaters. The Marriott has guaranteed a special convention rate of $99.00 single or double occupancy.

Members of the organizing committee will continue to expand plans and staff during the summer months, with information and marketing programs set to begin in the fall. Organizing committee members are Joan Caesar, Andy Dallas, Brad Jacobs, Roger Miller, Hank Moorehouse and "Obie" O'Brien.

 Magic Scholarship Awards Announced

The Society of American Magicians Magic Endowment Fund is proud to announce the award of three full tuition scholarships to attend summer magic camp: two awards are for the Tannen's Magic Camp, in Long Island, New York, and one award is for the Sorcerer's Summer Safari Magic Camp, in Ontario, Canada. The scholarships include tuition as well as travel expenses.

The first winner of a full tuition scholarship and travel expense to Tannen's Magic Camp is James (Nolan) McMahon, 12 years old, of St. Petersburg, Florida. Nolan is entering 8th grade at the Thurgood Marshall School. Nolan has performed magic since he was in a second grade school talent show, where he made his younger sister disappear. He is a member of the SYM and is constantly practicing to hone his magic craft. He hopes one day to be a renowned magician. He has performed his magic for adult groups of 50 or more people and has received standing ovations for his half hour magic shows. He is diligent and enthusiastic and works hard to perfect his tricks to take his magic to the next level.

The second award winner of a full tuition scholarship and travel expense to Tannen's Magic Camp is Kayla Lee Drescher, 15 years old, of Wallingford, Connecticut. Kayla is in 9th grade and attends the Mark T. Sheehan High School, where she has attained high honors while taking honor level courses. She has been a member of the SYM in Stamford as well as in Wallingford, Connecticut. Kayla performed at a magic show fundraiser which was attended by almost 500 spectators, and along with the other performers helped raise $2,600 for the school band program and $500 for the SYM Assembly. She is a team player and a leader, and shares her experience and expertise with other members of the SYM, especially the younger ones.

The third award for a full tuition scholarship and travel expense to Sorcerer's Summer Safari is to David Shack, 12 years old. David is in 6th grade at the John N. Bunn School, where he is an excellent student. He has leadership qualities and also is a team player who is eager to help his peers without being prompted. David performed in his school Talent Show and was the hit of the show. He also performs at the school's Lighthouse program, providing free evening programs to students in the community. He is an outstanding member of the SYM's Winnipeg Assembly #46, where he participates in events like close-up and stage competitions.

We are happy to make these awards to these three worthy candidates and we look forward to the continued development of all our winners in the performance of the magical arts.

Contributions to the Magic Endowment Fund are tax deductible and should be sent to:

John Moehring Named New Editor-in-Chief of M-U-M

May 24, 2005, New York City, NY - The Society of American Magicians has reached an agreement in principle with John Moehring, Editor of "MAGIC" magazine since 2001, to become the new Editor-in-Chief of the S. A.M. monthly magazine, M-U-M, effective August 1, 2005. Moehring will replace Past National President, David Goodsell, who has served as M-U-M Editor for 29 years, and who will be retiring from that role in 2006.

"We are so grateful and appreciative of the service David has given the S.A.M. in this role," said S. A.M. National President John Apperson. "Now we look forward with excitement to what John will bring to the M-U-M."

The S. A.M. is committed to making a significant investment in the M-U-M, the most visible benefit all members receive. The selection of Moehring caps an extensive national search for the position.

John Apperson praised the efforts of the M-U-M Editor Selection Committee, which he established in August 2004. Chaired by National President Elect Richard Dooley, and comprised of Past National Presidents Gary Hughes and Craig Dickson, with David Goodsell serving as an ex-officio member, the committee spent countless hours scouring through detailed applications and business plans, and interviewing finalists.

"Because of the importance of this decision, the process we followed was very disciplined," President Apperson said; "A detailed selection plan was developed and approved by the S.A.M. National Council, in order to ensure an orderly, fair and objective decision. We adhered to our plan and as we hoped, the process yielded a great outcome."

"We were incredibly impressed with the number and quality of applicants. Over 30 people expressed interest and we received formal application packets and business plans from about 15," said Dooley. "The high level of interest is a testament to the attractiveness of the Editor position and of the outstanding reputation of the S.A.M."

"The decision was not an easy one," Dooley continued, "there's so much great talent out there. We feel that John brings us the whole package, the 'been there done that' expertise we required, and is someone who can devote the time necessary to meet the need to take M-U-M to the next level. We feel very fortunate to be able to have someone who has worked in this capacity for what many perceive to be the Cadillac of the industry. We look forward to the expertise, creativity and contacts which John Moehring will bring to M-U-M. John is the perfect fit for this position at this time. We hope members will be as thrilled as we are to have him as a key player on our team."

A transition plan is being developed, to allow John to build his team. "We are very happy that David has agreed to do all he can to help make the transition an expedient and smooth one," said Mr. Apperson. Members should expect to see a new "look and feel" to the magazine as early as January.

BROKEN WAND: Jay Marshall, May 10, 2005

The Society of American Magicians mourns the passing of its Dean Jay Marshall on Tuesday evening May 10 at 7:15 PM in Chicago, Illinois.

At age 85 Mr. Marshall was the most beloved comedy magician and ventriloquist in our time, well known around the world. He joined the 103 year old Society in 1936 and was named Dean, in 1992, a lifetime position, and the highest honor afforded any magician in the U.S. He held membership number 2551.

His appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show, at Radio City Music Hall in New York, the Palladium in London and at the Palace Theater in New York, gave him international recognition. Along with his famous puppet "Lefty" he received standing ovations around the world. "Lefty" was made of a glove with button eyes, was developed during his service during WWII when he couldn't carry large ventriloquial puppets. Jay Marshall, was an authority on all forms of show business and also a collector of antique magic , circus and vaudeville memorabilia and had one of the largest poster collections in the country. As an actor he appeared in three Broadway plays.

Members of the Society will attend a "Broken Wand" ceremony (which was originally written for the death of Harry Houdini in 1926.) at his funeral .The symbolism is that without the man, the wand no longer has the magic and so it is broken.

Funeral Services will be Monday May 16, 2005 at Drake & Son, 5303 N. Western Ave. Chicago, IL 60625 773-561-6874

Visitation will be Sunday May 15 after 6:00 PM

 S.A.M. HALL OF FAME UPDATE

May 5, 2005, New York City, NY - Please see the Hall Of Fame Story if you hadn't yet read about the possible chemical contamination of the S.A.M. Hall Of Fame; if you have, read on for the updated situation...

For the benefit of S.A.M. members who have not visited the Hall of Fame and Magic Museum, you should know that the facility includes four theaters and numerous exhibits illustrating the history of magic. Most of the exhibits are housed in glass or plexiglass enclosed alcoves and display cases, and the Society's records are all contained in file cabinets and storage boxes.

The environmental consultants have tested for contaminants only in the bank's areas. Testing indicates that only exposed surfaces are contaminated -- items inside file cabinets, desk drawers, and so forth have tested negative for contaminants. THIS IS GOOD NEWS FOR THE MUSEUM. It is very likely that the enclosures protected most of the items on display from serious contamination, but until samples can be taken from selected items inside the displays we will not know for certain.

More information will be posted when it becomes available.

S.A.M. HALL OF FAME TEMPORARILY CLOSED TO PUBLIC VISITS

March 7, 2005, New York City, NY - The Society of American Magicians Hall of Fame and Magic Museum is temporarily closed to public visits due to possible chemical contamination of the building in which the Hall of Fame is housed, following a fire in a nearby Department of Water and Power (DWP) vault.

The building owner closed access to the building until a possible environmental hazard can be evaluated and contaminants removed. The Hall will reopen after the building owner completes the environmental hazard mitigation.

For full details of the problem see the Press Page.

The Society of American Magicians Hall of Fame and Magic Museum, located in Los Angeles, houses exhibits and memorabilia illustrating the history of magic and its performers. Entirely volunteer staffed, the Hall and Museum are open only on Program Nights and by appointment. For information on visiting when the Hall reopens please contact Hall President John Engman at 626-281-4943 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Pacific Time, or Vice President Ed Thomas at 323-644-1669 or magicmred@earthlink.net.  MAGIC CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS ANNOUNCED

June 15 - The Society of American Magicians Magic Endowment Fund is proud to announce the award of three full tuition scholarships for attendance at summer camps: Two at Tannen’s Magic Camp, in Long Island, New York and one at Sorcerer’s Summer Safari in Toronto, Ontario. The scholarships include tuition as well as travel expenses.

The first winner of a full tuition scholarship and travel expense to Tannen’s Magic Camp is Chad Juros, 16 years old, of Egg Harbor Twp., NJ. Chad is a two-time cancer survivor patient and was taught magic by his father as a means to help him get through his disease. Unfortunately his father died several years ago of brain cancer. But despite hospitalization and treatment Chad was inspired by his Dad to continue to develop his performing arts. His love of magic has helped him through tough times. Chad’s story was featured in the December issue of the SYMbol. Lance Burton was one of those who recommended Chad for a scholarship. He saw Chad perform at the national convention of the Society of American Magicians in Las Vegas, and was highly impressed with Chad’s skills. Chad also performed for the First Lady, Mrs. Bush, at the White House and at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll. He is a remarkable young man, with skill and creativeness as well as a talented magician. We shall surely hear much of him in the future and he is well deserving of our scholarship.

The second award winner of a full tuition scholarship and travel expense to Tannen’s Magic Camp is Robert Rhodes. He is 13 years old, from Norfolk, Virginia. He is a diligent student of magic and says it has increased his confidence. He has performed at the Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia. In the annals of magic, Long Tack Sam is considered the most successful of the Chinese magicians. He last performed it at the Roxy theater in 1950 when he emceed an all Chinese show.
