OATH:

If accepted as a Member, I agree to do my best to elevate the Art of Magic and to abide by the Constitution, By-laws, Code of Ethics and Ritual of the Society of American Magicians.

I shall endeavor to cooperate with the Society in the promotion of its objectives and to promote harmony among those interested in magic and to advance the ethics of the profession.

I agree not to expose any modus operandi from stage, platform, television, radio or in any manner whatsoever.

I am opposed to cheap literature wherein magical secrets are needlessly exposed, or to the sale of professional magical effects in cheap miniature form to the public.

I am opposed to needless and useless explanations of secrets to persons who are not entitled to know them or who are not interested in magic.

I am opposed to placing any legitimate performer in a predicament while that person is before an audience.

Membership Categories

There are six categories of membership in the Society of American Magicians, a world-wide organization.

ASSEMBLY MEMBERSHIP: This is the most popular form of membership, since it allows the member to participate in local Assembly functions, enjoy camaraderie with fellow magicians, share knowledge and practice of the magical arts and grow in its rich history. ("Assembly" is the name given to each local club of magicians making up the life-blood of the S.A.M.) Application must be approved by the Assembly and local dues may be required.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP: This form of membership is available to anyone who is not able to affiliate with an Assembly. Assembly and Associate Members receive a subscription to the S.A.M. magic magazine M-U-M.

JUNIOR ASSEMBLY MEMBERSHIP: Certain S.A.M. Assemblies allow Junior Members to affiliate with their Assembly.

YOUNG MEMBERSHIP: This membership is available to young persons between the ages of 7 and 17. Young Members may form their own S.Y.M. Assemblies (Society of Young Magicians). They receive a membership pin and a monthly publication written especially for young magicians, The Magic SYMbol. S.Y.M. Assemblies have adult leaders who provide guidance, special programs, guest speakers and lectures, and magic instruction at Assembly meetings. The leaders receive their own newsletter, The S.Y.M. LeaderLetter, as an excellent idea resource. Some S.A.M. Assemblies allow Young Members to participate in their activities as well.

CONTINGENCY MEMBERSHIP: This special class of membership is available to individuals who live in the same household as a Member in good standing. Contingency Members do not receive the M-U-M magazine because a subscription is already assigned to the same address.

SUSTAINING MEMBERSHIP: Any member from any of the previous categories can become a Sustaining Member by making a contribution to the S.A.M. Endowment Fund in any amount above the regular Dues and Fees.
