Membership Categories
There are six categories of membership in the Society of American Magicians, a world-wide organization.
ASSEMBLY MEMBERSHIP: This is the most popular form of membership, since it allows the member to participate
in local Assembly functions, enjoy camaraderie with fellow magicians, share knowledge and practice of the
magical arts and grow in its rich history. ("Assembly" is the name given to each local club of
magicians making up the life-blood of the S.A.M.) Application must be approved by the Assembly and local
dues may be required.
ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP: This form of membership is available to anyone who is not able to affiliate with
an Assembly. Assembly and Associate Members receive a subscription to the S.A.M. magic magazine M-U-M.
JUNIOR ASSEMBLY MEMBERSHIP: Certain S.A.M. Assemblies allow Junior Members to affiliate with their
Assembly.
YOUNG MEMBERSHIP: This membership is available to young persons between the ages of 7 and 17. Young
Members may form their own S.Y.M. Assemblies (Society of Young Magicians). They receive a membership
pin and a monthly publication written especially for young magicians, The Magic SYMbol. S.Y.M. Assemblies
have adult leaders who provide guidance, special programs, guest speakers and lectures, and magic
instruction at Assembly meetings. The leaders receive their own newsletter, The S.Y.M. LeaderLetter,
as an excellent idea resource. Some S.A.M. Assemblies allow Young Members to participate in their
activities as well.
CONTINGENCY MEMBERSHIP: This special class of membership is available to individuals who live in the
same household as a Member in good standing. Contingency Members do not receive the M-U-M magazine
because a subscription is already assigned to the same address.
SUSTAINING MEMBERSHIP: Any member from any of the previous categories can become a Sustaining Member
by making a contribution to the S.A.M. Endowment Fund in any amount above the regular Dues and Fees.
